âSo, where are we headed?â Eugene asked.
The next morning had dawned bright and clear, with the trilling of birds and brilliantly white, puffy clouds as tall as mountains. It was the sort of day that I would have much preferred to spend enjoying a good, strong coffee out on the terrace, but I was instead on the way to the next part of my investigation.
âMrs. Burkeâs home,â I said. âShe left me her address and said that if I ever had any further questions, to find her there. Apparently, the funeral is to be there, and so, I feel it will be the place with the best chance of finding her.â
âAnd she is Mr. Culpepperâs sister, yes?â Eugene asked.
âCorrect,â I said.
I stared out the window at the passing countryside. I was beginning to dislike spending a great deal of my days in a motorcar, but it was the way that it was for now.
We must make of it what we will.
I shook my head, frowning at my faint reflection in the window.
Felix and I had said nothing to each other since the day before. Iâd left the estate, gone to London with Eugene, and come home to a dark house. I rose early as well, and only saw my brother for a brief moment in passing after breakfast; he on his way there, and me on my way out. He gave me a quick glance, his expression entirely blank, and continued on. I might as well have been the wall, he showed so little interest.
My first instinct had been to tell him everything. But the desire quickly fled when I remembered how upset heâd been with me that I had taken on the job in the first place. He wouldnât have wanted to hear anything, and I knew that he would simply question my desire to continue on with it when I had found absolutely nothing useful.
I still wasnât entirely sure that I agreed with Eugene that Miss Bellingham was innocent, but for the moment, I found it better to trust his instincts than to question. Besides, visiting Mrs. Burke might give me the chance to ask about the club singer, specifically.
That was, if she remembered her, or even knew of their romance in the first place.
âI want to speak with Mrs. Burke again because when Felix and I were there the last time, discussions of the funeral cut our conversation short,â I said. âMy hope is that she will be able to give me names of people to speak with. I canât imagine she wouldnât have some.â
âRight,â Eugene said.
The estate where Mrs. Burke lived had more charm than that of her parents. It sat outside the city, but was tucked away from the road, hidden amongst a thick grove of trees. The sunlight flickered through the branches, sparkling as we drove up the long, winding drive.
The grove opened up to a low hill and a pasture in the distance filled with golden wheat. âItâs lovely, isnât it?â Eugene asked. âReminds me of my brotherâs home back in Pennsylvania.
